Marriott has added the fifth Spanish property under its Luxury Collection portfolio and the first in the capital Madrid, with the unveiling of the renovated Santa Mauro.

The 49-room hotel is housed within three buildings dating back to the 18th century in the city’s Chamberi district, which were formerly home to the Duke of Santa Mauro.

The property has previously been marketed under Marriott’s AC and Autograph Collection brands, but has undergone renovations to its guestrooms, public areas, restaurants and gardens, and been reflagged as Santo Mauro, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Madrid.

The refurbishment works have been led by Spanish interior designer Lorenzo Castillo, with rooms refreshed using “furnishings of plush leather, midnight blue velvet and silk”.

The hotel’s La Biblioteca and El Jardin dining venues are now headed up by Chef Rafael Pena (owner of Gresca in Barcelona), and offer menus “inspired by the meals of noble houses with sensational tasting menus and dedicated offerings for the Spanish ritual of late breakfast and the afternoon snack ‘La Merienda’”.

Other facilities include an indoor swimming pool and seven meeting and events spaces, while a new spa and fitness centre, and a “part-outdoor event space” are both send to be unveiled in summer 2022.

Marriott’s Luxury Collection portfolio currently comprises of just under 120 hotels and resorts in over 35 countries and territories.

Santa Mauro joins other Spanish properties under the brand including Hotel Marques de Riscal in the Basque Country, Castillo Hotel Son Vida in Mallorca, Hotel Maria Cristina in San Sebastian, and Hotel Alfonso XIII in Seville.

Commenting on the news Philipp Weghmann, vice president and global brand leader, The Luxury Collection, said:

“Madrid is simultaneously a spirited, modern metropolis and a place of discovery imbued with the rich history of the Spanish capital.

“The destination is a natural fit for The Luxury Collection and our global explorers who seek immersive cultural experiences, and we cannot wait to welcome them at Santo Mauro, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Madrid.”

Marriott recently announced plans to open its first JW Marriott property in Madrid, located on the city’s Plaza de Canalejas.
