Marriott International has brought its Luxury Collection brand to the city of Hobart on the island state of Tasmania.
The Tasman, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Hobart is located at Parliament Square overlooking Hobart’s waterfront, and is a redevelopment of former state government office buildings showcasing three eras of design.
Design by Australian architects Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp and interior design firm Joseph Pang Design Consultants blends Georgian, art deco and contemporary styles.
The property offers 152 rooms and suites, with decor varying across the accommodations. The original 1840s heritage building features rooms with modern craftsmanship and design, sandstone details, restored gas fireplaces and marble bathrooms. The art deco building, meanwhile, offers a modern take of the 1940s style through details including Tasmanian native sassafras timber-inlaid ceilings. Finally, the modern pavilion building houses contemporary rooms and overlooks Sullivan’s Cove.
The three dining venues include Italian restaurant Peppina by renowned Tasmanian chef Massimo Mele; craft cocktail bar Mary Mary; and modern Australian restaurant Deco Lounge, which offers afternoon tea or a light lunch.
The Tasman includes 769 sqm of meetings and events space, including an underground warehouse-style space that has capacity for 400 guests. There is also a 24-hour fitness centre with cardio equipment and free weights.
The hotel is within walking distance of the city’s famous Salamanca Markets, St David’s Park and Sullivan’s Cove.
Philipp Weghmann, Vice President and Global Brand Leader of The Luxury Collection, commented:
“Hobart is a truly captivating and dynamic city, allowing a seamless fit for The Luxury Collection, known for creating experiences for global explorers in some of the world’s most enchanting destinations.
“The Tasman will offer our guests a transformative journey, drawing on the incredible history, evocative contemporary culture, and awe-inspiring natural wonders of one of the most intriguing and farthest corners of the globe.”
Rajeev Menon, President, Asia Pacific (excluding Greater China), Marriott International, added:
“We are thrilled to unveil the first The Luxury Collection hotel in Australia with the opening of The Tasman, a hotel that will redefine the destination of Tasmania.
“This marks a new milestone in the growth of The Luxury Collection and further diversifies our growing collection of hotels in the world’s most desirable locations. We look forward to welcoming guests to experience this wonderful city.”
